After a one-year hiatus, Anugerah Industri Muzik (AIM) is set to return with its 22nd edition later this year.

The event was last held in 2014 where local rapper SonaOne made history when his track No More won Best Song. It was the first time in AIM’s 21-year history that an English language song won in that category.

This year’s edition of the AIM, which honours achievements in the local music industry, will feature 24 categories such as Best Album, Best New Artiste and Best Vocal Performance In A Song (Male/Female).

This year will also see the inclusion of five new categories – Most Downloaded Song Of The Year, Most Streamed Song Of The Year, Most Viewed Official Music Video On YouTube, Best Selling Ringback Tone Song and Best Malaysian Singer.

Chairman of AIM 22 organising committee Rosmin Hashim said the new categories reflect current trends in the music industry. “Apart from that, we also want to honour local recording companies for their effort of promoting local music,” he said during a press conference in Kuala Lumpur.

For the first time in AIM history, the public can vote for the winner in the category of Best Malaysian Singer. The nominees will be individuals who are nominated in the Best Vocal Performance category.

“We want to encourage public participation. We believe they will be able to make the right choice towards determining a deserving winner,” Rosmin added.

The rest of the categories will be decided by a panel of esteemed judges. Rosmin said AIM 22 will be a spectacular event that highlights the progress of the local music industry. “We’re definitely aiming to organise a prestigious, memorable event,” he said.

After Anugerah Meletop Era, Anugerah Juara Lagu and Anugerah Pilihan Online, AIM is the latest local award show to receive lucrative sponsorship from a local beauty company.

At the press conference, Sweedskin owner Datuk Mohamad Suparadi said his company has agreed to pump in RM1.5mil to be the main sponsor for AIM 22. For more information, check out www.aim.org.my.
