We're one year away from a new Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight trilogy, Inception, Interstellar) film, but to remind us Dunkirk is coming we've got the first teaser trailer to do just that — tease the living daylights out of us.
And what a tease it is!
Watch it below.
It brings us to a beach full of soldiers, introducing us to its World War II setting — and then right at the end there's this brilliant long shot of a solider in a boat casually looking up to the sky with a hint of a smile on his face before horror strikes and a fierce fight breaks out.
We don't see the fight yet, but we know it's coming. And that ticking clock running throughout tells us time will play a crucial role in the film. Based on the real-life story of the British, French and Belgian forces who were holed up at Dunkirk and surrounded by German forces, Nolan's next film will track the extraordinary circumstances they found themselves in and how they managed to save hundreds of thousands of lives by evacuating soldiers with the enemy breathing down their necks.
Nolan veterans Tom Hardy and Cillian Murphy star alongside recent Oscar winner Mark Rylance, Kenneth Branagh, James D'Arcy and more. The date to look forward to is July 21, 2017.
