The 9 Things Already in Your Closet That Will Give You Instant Fall 2016 Balenciaga Style
Today’s Balenciaga show in Paris showed us that seemingly everyday pieces can take on new life when tweaked a little: For example, wear your winter puffer off the shoulder; put a pair of weekend-ready jeans with a really chic coat. The brand’s new head of house, Demna Gvasalia (who also designs at street-style star favorite Vetements), presented an amazingly directional and stylish-yet-utilitarian collection. It’s going to be one of the lines to wear come fall. In the meantime, you’ll be delighted and excited to find that many of the items he riffed on are already in your closet.
1. The denim trucker jacket
This is one of the jacket styles we know you’ve already got in your denim repertoire. Gvasalia rounded the shoulders of his (a classic Balenciaga silhouette) and put a seam across the front. But the washed out indigo look and feel is like so many we’ve seen in the past year or two—with a twist, of course.
2. The athleisure jacket
Hoodies are back (actually Vetements’ version is one of the must-have items of spring), and we’re happy to see that one of the pieces we’ve been wearing on weekends is front and center on the runway too.
3. Jeans with the seam let out
Along with dip-dyed hems, this is one denim look that’s been a must for us. Balenciaga only reinforces its coolness.
4. Puffer coats
Also spotted at Marc Jacobs and Alexander McQueen, this piece has been beautifully reimagined. At Balenciaga it’s worn off the shoulder, a neat trick for making your own winter essential look new again.
5. An “ugly” normcore parka
This is one of those things you order from a sporty catalog because it’s so useful—and you don’t care what it looks like. Now you can wear this dad style with even more confidence.
6. An off-the-shoulder top
Enough has been said about this style to make you know it’s hear to stay, even for, as Gvasalia shows us, fall.
7. The oversize shopper
We’ve all got one of these—it’s indispensable when it comes to hauling groceries or getting away on the weekends. This style from Balenciaga takes the whole concept up a notch.
8. The knife-pleat skirt
This midi-length style has basically replaced the pencil skirt in your work wardrobe. Now’s the time to try it in a bolder hue, like this red.
9. An oversize shirt
This has been a go-to addition to skinny jeans or leggings. But seeing it over a skirt a la Balenciaga makes us think it’s time to try it in a new way.
