Thanks to Aerie, Our New Style Crush Is a Body-Positive Man From South Carolina
American Eagle, masters of the cheeky is-this-serious-or-not? announcement, have done it again, releasing a men’s campaign for Aerie that likely has something to do with an early April Fool’s prank. Not for the message (“the real you is sexy,” which is awesome), but because of the hilarious accompanying video that includes bubble baths and belfies.
The men chosen to front it are a cast we’d love to hang with, but out of everyone we’re most in love with Kelvin Davis of Columbia, South Carolina. He’s the artist behind Notoriously Dapper, a body-positive style blog made for men. “I went into a store to buy a red blazer, and the 44 regular was too small. When I asked for a size up, I was told that was the largest and remember feeling very low and self-conscious,” he told us about the impetus to start blogging. “I know I’m a bigger guy, but no one should be made to feel low just because they don’t fit in a particular size.”
Blazer fiasco aside, style has always mattered to Davis. “The way I dress has always given me confidence and helped me shape how I love myself. It’s a beautiful thing to feel confident, and no one can take that away from you.” The attitude screams Aerie, so it should come as no surprise that the brand reached out. “I was familiar with the women’s campaign so I jumped on board. They want to give the message to men now, and it seems to be working out pretty well.”
When it comes to Davis’ OOTDs, it might not be sundresses and sandals we can copy ourselves, but there are some major takeaways. Stock up on classics, and have fun with whatever you’re wearing, but also fight to keep nasty thoughts away and focus on how things feel. “It’s never about the brand you wear, it’s about how you you wear the clothes and feel in them. How you can exude confidence in your style, and identify who you are as an individual! That’s what fashion is all about.” Likewise, feel-good captions like the below pepper his Insta feed.
Body positivity is for everyone. Every race and gender. I personally still struggle with my own body image from time to time. But being body positive is about knowing your body is good enough the way it is! Always remember no one can be you. You are one hundred percent original in every way. Keep on keeping on even during the toughest times! Be You and Be CONFIDENT!!
Last year was one that contained major strides forward for the plus-size industry, and Davis says it’s helping men’s follow suit. “The women’s industry has been changing the game for body diversity, and it’s helped lead the conversation for more male body diversity too,” he said. “People are now starting to get in on the issue, and it’s all positive. Everyone deserves to be celebrated!”
We’re all about body positivity. Come check out the chat we had with another gorgeous Aerie model, Barbie Ferreira.
