Power Rangers: With a new Power Rangers movie set to hit theaters on March 24, 2017, plans are already afoot for more installments in the series. Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer said, "We are really, really excited about the Power Rangers movie. We could see doing five or six or seven.” The first movie is a reboot of the origin story told in the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers TV series. [Variety]

 

Maze Runner: The Scorch Trial

Alita: Battle Angel: Reportedly, Rosa Salazar (Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials) has landed the plum title role in Alita: Battle Angel. She was among several finalists floated last month. Robert Rodriguez is set to direct the live-action version of a Japanese manga about a cyborg bounty hunter; James Cameron will produce. [Collider]

 

Mel Gibson

Thor: Mel Gibson says he was once offered the role of "Thor's dad," but decided not to do it. Evidently the actor was referring to Thor (2011), directed by Kenneth Branagh, who previously worked with Gibson on Branagh's 1996 version of Hamlet. Anthony Hopkins ended up portraying Odin, the father of Thor. [The Guardian]

 

Deepwater Horizon

Deepwater Horizon Trailer: Mark Wahlberg stars in a new trailer for Deepwater Horizon. Based on a true story, the movie explores what happened on an oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico when things went very, very wrong. Kate Hudson, Dylan O'Brien, Gina Rodriguez, John Malkovich and Kurt Russell also star; it opens in theaters on September 30. [Movieclips]
