Ippo Hafiz, the voice of local romantic dramas
Local singer Muhammad Hafiz Yaziz or better known as Ippo Hafiz has TV drama Teman Lelaki Upahan to thank for his popularity. He sang Rahsia, the theme song for the show starring Ungku Ismail Aziz and Elizad Shahrifuddin last year and viewers seemed to have paid attention to Ippo’s idle mellow voice.
The singer’s ballad Hujan Sepi was also selected as part of the soundtrack of Teman Lelaki Upahan. Both videos for the songs on YouTube have since garnered over two milion views.
The fact that people are paying attention to his music is something Ippo – who has been trying hard to carve a name for himself in the industry for the past 10 years – has always dreamt of.
“After finishing school in 2005, I fell in love with making music and wanted to work in the industry. It was not possible then, but it is now,” he said in an interview.
Ippo’s love for music led him to reality competitions like Rentak Irama Jalanan on TVi in 2009. He also entered Juara Muzik Pahang FM and won. However, Ippo admitted that the competitions were not enough to propel him into the spotlight, but things changed when his song was chosen to be in Teman Lelaki Upahan.
After getting more exposure, Ippo decided to release a self-titled debut album; Kekal Bahagia, Rahsia and Hujan Sepi can be found on this album. Ippo shared that making and producing an album with good quality sound was important for him. “The mastering for the album was done by music enginner Tom Coyne of Sterling Sound in the United States. He clearly has done a good job,” he said.
When asked if he has a favourite song from the album, Ippo replied: “(I like) Kekal Bahagia because the song represents the mantra to stay happy always and spread happiness to your loved ones.”
Ippo is determined to keep his momentum going. He has another song for a local series coming out soon. He hopes to emulate the works of his idols Tan Sri P. Ramlee and Datuk M. Nasir, and dreams of performing a duet with Datuk Siti Nurhaliza one day.
“I’m here to stay and I’m willing to take on any challenges as they come,” he concluded.
