The teen romance is one of the most enduring subgenres around. It's been popular for decades and shows no signs of slowing down, though in recent years these hit stories have moved away from a standard Romeo and Juliet model and more toward being like Romeo and Juliet, but one of them has cancer. The Fault in Our Stars, Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, Me Before You, If I Stay, The Choice— they're all about perfect couples whose only obstacle to having a long life together is that one of them is probably going to die before that can happen.
The Space Between Us is the latest movie looking to break your heart with a love story about someone with an actual broken heart, and it easily has the most ludicrous plot of them all. It's about a boy who is secretly born aboard a spaceship on a mission to Mars. He grows up on the Red Planet in relative isolation from our green-grass ways. He then heads to Earth for the first time, but there's a problem. He grew up in a low-gravity environment, and life on Earth will eventually kill him. So naturally he escapes the life of being a lab rat and tracks down a girl he's fallen in love with over the Internet.
So, yeah, like we said, the plot is a bit ludicrous. But even still, it looks like it's going to unabashedly yank on our heartstrings all the same. Asa Butterfield and Britt Robertson look just adorable together, so it's hard not to pull for them to overcome the Martian's brittle bones and find a way to make their interplanetary love work. What a delightfully weird sentence to write.
The Space Between Us hits theaters on August 19, 2016.
