There are two distinct categories of leggings: There are the ones you reserve solely for the gym or for lounging at home, and there are those you wear out on the weekends, dates, or maybe even to work on a casual Friday. We all love a stretch pant now and again, but it’s important that you do not overlap these categories. Not only will it lead to wardrobe confusion (what drawer would they even go in?), but wearing your gym pants out for a night on the town just isn’t chic at all.

How to make the distinction? Gym-ready leggings can have neon, mesh or other sport details and they can be cropped or mid-calf length. “Going-out” leggings that look more like actual pants have finer details, such as topstitching, leather or suede insets, and they’re most definitely ankle length or a tad longer and thicker than lightweight performance styles. The latter trousers can be worn with longer tunics and sweaters, or even a crop top and robe coat, à la Kendall Jenner. You can also up the luxe factor by investing in a pair in suede or leather.
